Greenwood is one of Minnesota’s smallest cities; as a result, few cities can rival the serenity, privacy, small-town charm, and sense of community of the city of Greenwood. Located along two of Lake Minnetonka’s best bays—Excelsior Bay and Saint Albans Bay—and their lakeshore and lakeside homes, Greenwood is the ideal city to buy a home in Minneapolis if you are looking for private, peaceful lakeside property on Lake Minnetonka.
Greenwood is home to about 800 people in about 300 households. The city is quite small—only half a square mile in total area, and even half of that half comprising of water and lakeshore. But despite its small size, Greenwood has a lot to offer: Homeowners enjoy proximity to Lake Minnetonka with swimming, boating, fishing waterskiing, water sports, kayaking, and, in the winter, snowmobiling, ice fishing and skating. The west side of the city closest to Lake Minnetonka features a winding trail perfect for walks, jogs, and bike rides. Greenwood is also home to the Old Log Theater, giving residents a great place for local entertainment.
Greenwood is also conveniently close to the excitement and amenities of the rest of the Twin Cities—it’s only 20 minutes west of Minneapolis and is only minutes away from the larger suburbs of the western metro—Minnetonka, Chanhassen, Eden Prairie, and Wayzata. And it’s also close to the smaller, more tightly-knit small towns and communities in the area—Excelsior, Shorewood, Deephaven, Cottagewood, and Tonka Bay. Thus, while the city offers its own unparalleled peace, privacy and community, the excitement and bustle of Minneapolis and its larger suburbs is only a short drive away from any Greenwood house or home.
Greenwood may be small, but it has so much to offer, from its beautiful lakehomes and lakehouses, to its tightly-knit community, to its peaceful seclusion, to its convenient location. As far as buying a home in a small-town goes, Greenwood is Minnesota’s gem.

Just a few decades ago, Greenwood was part of the Excelsior Township, being only a short distance from Excelsior’s downtown area. Today, though Greenwood has formed its own city, Greenwood’s community events largely overlap with the community events of the City of Excelsior. Some highlights from throughout the year include the following:
- In the middle of July, the Crazy Days Fair & Festival features street markets and sales, as well as festival events like face painting. Crazy Days makes for a great family event, as there is something for everyone to enjoy!
- During the Christmas Season, Excelsior hosts a number of events, from horse-drawn carriages, to caroling, to holiday markets, to the North Pole Trolley, and even the lighted lantern parade.
- During the early Fall, Apple Day celebrates Minnesota’s apple harvests. A wide variety of apples are available to taste, try, and buy, and a delicious number of caramel apples.
- Each Thursday throughout the summer, Concerts in the Park host a number of musical events right on Excelsior’s Lake Minnetonka shoreline. A number of musical varieties are booked, from jazz to classical to blues, and each evening’s musical entertainment on the park is entirely free.
These are just a few highlights for events throughout the entire year. For more information on these events, or for information on other Greenwood events, visit http://www.ci.excelsior.mn.us/index.aspx?nid=207.
