Minnetonka Beach Homes for Sale

The Village of Minnetonka Beach is a boot-shaped peninsula located right on and in the middle of Lake Minnetonka. As a village, it is very small, but it offers some of the best, most luxurious real estate in all of Minnesota. The majority of Minnetonka Beach real estate is lakeside property and lakeshore real estate; thus, Minnetonka Beach homes are often luxury homes and offer an unparalleled degree of peace, privacy, and luxury.

Minnetonka Beach, as only a small village, has a modest population of only 614 people in 215 households. Thus, the town maintains a village-like atmosphere and ambiance. The city itself is rather small in terms of total area as well—the total area of the entire city is barely half a square mile. But with a total of 215 homes in the city, the average homeowner owns over one and a half acres of lakeside real estate, making the city a paradise for anyone looking to buy a luxury home in Minnesota or looking for luxury housing on Lake Minnetonka. Minnetonka Beach is home to a number of historic homes on Lake Minnetonka, with a variety of distinctive homes and historic mansions. Because the city is entirely residential, with the exception of the Lafayette Club and St. Martin’s Church, Minnetonka Beach can offer a variety of luxury housing and lakeside real estate on Lake Minnetonka.

The city has developed throughout history with careful planning on behalf of the city to maintain open spaces and parkland areas, which preserves the natural beauty of the island-like peninsula with tall trees and green grasses. Careful planning also maintains the city’s small town charm and village atmosphere.

That history of the city is rich and colorful. The city was originally settled in the early 1850’s as part of the settlement of the Lake Minnetonka area. But it wasn’t until the 1870’s and 1880’s that Minnetonka Beach began to be officially opened for settlement. Around that time, the unique and beautiful location of Minnetonka Beach attracted prominent businessman James J. Hill to construct a summer resort for passengers of the Great Northern Railroad. Hill’s resort soon opened with the construction and opening of the Hotel Lafayette, which soon became famous and historic for its magnificent balls, military band concerts, and competitive tennis. However, at the turn of the century, the hotel burned down, and the historic property was then modeled into what is still today the Lafayette Club. The city continued its small growth until 1922, when it was officially incorporated as a city. Today, the city remains one of Minnesota’s smallest, and maintains its historic and luxury atmosphere.

As a peninsula located entirely on and centered in Lake Minnetonka, the Village of Minnetonka Beach offers a location that is very much unparalleled by any other city in all of Minnesota. With its outstanding lakeside real estate, luxury housing, and historic presence, Minnetonka Beach is a fantastic place for anyone looking to buy a luxury home on Lake Minnetonka.

Just a few decades ago, Minnetonka Beach was part of the Excelsior Township, being only a short distance from Excelsior’s downtown area. Today, though Excelsior Beach has formed its own city, the city’s community events largely overlap with the community events of the City of Excelsior. Some highlights from throughout the year include the following:

  • In the middle of July, the Crazy Days Fair & Festival features street markets and sales, as well as festival events like face painting. Crazy Days makes for a great family event, as there is something for everyone to enjoy!
  • During the Christmas Season, Excelsior hosts a number of events, from horse-drawn carriages, to caroling, to holiday markets, to the North Pole Trolley, and even the lighted lantern parade.
  • During the early Fall, Apple Day celebrates Minnesota’s apple harvests. A wide variety of apples are available to taste, try, and buy, and a delicious number of caramel apples.
  • Each Thursday throughout the summer, Concerts in the Park host a number of musical events right on Excelsior’s Lake Minnetonka shoreline. A number of musical varieties are booked, from jazz to classical to blues, and each evening’s musical entertainment on the park is entirely free.

These are just a few highlights for events throughout the entire year. For more information on these events, or for information on other Minnetonka Beach events, visit http://www.ci.excelsior.mn.us/index.aspx?nid=207.
