Located right on, in, and around Lake Minnetonka, northwest of the lake, Mound is a lake-surrounded city full of Minnesota lake life. The city offers a bustling downtown area and a strong sense of community history, as well as a small town charm and a lifetime of lake activities.
The city’s most distinctive mark is its lakes. The city itself is surrounded by Dutch Lake, Lake Langdon, Seton Lake, and Black Lake, as well as Harrison Bay, Spring Park Bay, Cooks Bay, and Priest Bay of Lake Minnetonka. If that seems like a lot of lakeshore and lakeside property for one city, that is because over 40% of the city’s five square miles of property are entirely water, giving the city over two full square miles of water. The city has an unparalleled 17 miles of lakeshore property, with 11 of those miles of lakeshore property right on Lake Minnetonka. The city itself is estimated to have over 1,000 docks and even more boats, and there is plenty of room on public docks, with 144 public dock sites, as well as 167 public sites on common lakeshore property, offering a lakeshore lifestyle for even those without lakeshore property right on one of Mound’s many lakes. So buying a home or house in Mound guarantees a lifetime of access to Lake Minnetonka’s lakeside lifestyle.
Of course, there is much more to Mound than just its lakes. Mound offers a quaint small town feel, with just about 10,000 residents spread out across its five square miles and just under 4,000 households. That small town atmosphere gives Mound residents a sense of peace, independence and security, as well as a sense of community and friendliness. The city is home to a total of 27 parks—a huge amount given Mound’s small size. Mound’s downtown center features an active shopping and entertainment center, with a four-story parking ramp and access to bars, restaurants, and activity centers. And Mound is just over 20 miles from downtown Minneapolis, making it a thirty-minute drive to Minneapolis’ city-life to contrast Mound’s small town feel.
In addition to the town’s small town ambiance, the town boasts a rich and exciting history. Interestingly, the city’s history actually begins in prehistory: “Mound,” the city’s name, derives from the prehistoric Indian mounds once found within the city limits. Up until the 19th century, the Dakota Indians saw the beautiful lake area as sacred ground, home to the last resting places of others. Mound and the Lake Minnetonka area was first discovered by the adventurous young boys from Fort Snelling in 1822, and thirty years later, the Lake Minnetonka area began to be settled and developed. By the turn of the century, with the construction of the Great Northern Railroad, Mound and Lake Minnetonka property became famous as premier resort real estate. In the 20th century and today, Mound continues to grow and is now proudly the hometown of a number of celebrities, including actor Kevin Sorbo, award-winning writer Lisa Wysocky, and, perhaps most notably, the Andrews Sisters, who, even at the height of their career, annually came back to Mound to enjoy Minnesota summer lake life. Mound is also notable as the birthplace of the Tonka Truck and Tonka Toys.
Buying a home in Mound offers an unparalleled Minnesota lakehome lifestyle and a genuine small-town atmosphere and community. Its rich history and beautiful location has attracted celebrities and continues to attract growth on its beautiful resort property and real estate.
