Osseo
If you’re looking for small-town charm in a welcoming community where everyone knows your name, look no further than Osseo. Located right between Maple Grove and Brooklyn Park about 25 minutes from downtown Minneapolis, Osseo is a teensy-tiny suburb in comparison to other cities in the area. While other communities can boast thousands of acres and over 50 square miles of total city area, Osseo, as a small town, is just 0.8 square miles total. But what it lacks in size it makes up for in spirit – literally. There isn’t a single town in all of Minnesota that can boast of Osseo’s small town charm and togetherness. Buying a home in Osseo means buying a home in a tightly-knit, friendly, welcoming community that will love a new neighbor.
In a town of about 2,500 people – about 600 families – you might expect that there’s not a lot that goes on in the town. Fortunately for prospective homebuyers, you’d be wrong. Osseo hosts enough major events to rival any other suburb in Minnesota! In winter around Christmas time, residents gather together in the park to light the Osseo Christmas tree, and families bring their children to visit with Santa. Horse-drawn carriages and food and drink bring the magic and fun of Christmas to life as residents and home owners enjoy the Osseo spirit. In the weeks following Labor Day, the Lions Roar festival hosts a parade, a carnival, street vendors, arts and crafts, and much more. Throughout the summer, Osseo’s hometown Boerboom Veterans Park hosts Music in the Park – which features everything from jazz and blues to Elvis impersonators and special children’s musical events. On other days in the park, Osseo is home to Movies in the Park, which features largely family-friendly movie-viewing on a big screen during weekdays in the park. And there’s much more here – a Marching Band Festival in June, a Farmers Market, and much more.
And for a city of under a square mile, the city has a lot to offer in permanent establishments. Two total parks may not seem like a lot, but most other suburbs pale in comparison to Osseo’s ratio of three parks per square mile – almost everyone who buys a home in Osseo will be within walking distance of Osseo’s parks. And of course, the bordering towns of Maple Grove and Brooklyn Park have dozens and dozens of parks that are a short distance away from any Osseo home. And on top of parks, Osseo offers a downtown area bustling with friendly faces and familiar spots. Dozens and dozens of restaurants and shops make the commercial district both convenient as well as friendly. And of course, Maple Grove and Brooklyn Park offer movie theatres, bowling alleys, golf courses, and more. And for those interesting in a nightlife outside of the friendly local bars or entertainment on a grander scale than Osseo’s 2,500 residents, downtown Minneapolis is under 30 minutes away.
And the above list doesn’t even mention Osseo’s award-winning schools. With a huge variety of public schools and private schools in the area, from Christian and Catholic private schools to public schools focusing on the arts or math and technology (in addition to many mainstream award-winning public schools), Osseo has a schooling program every parent can be confident in.
All that considered, Osseo’s small size is its greatest asset. Few other cities in Minnesota that boast of friendliness and small-town charm can hold a candle to Osseo, which truly is a small-town, welcoming, neighborly community. Buying a home in Osseo buys you a spot in the wonderful community. It buys your children a great education. And it buys you a host of events throughout the year to enjoy with your new neighbors. For those who truly want small town charm and friendly neighbors, those buying a home in Minnesota really can’t do better than buying a home or house in Osseo.

Osseo Community Events
There is perhaps no greater reason to buy a home in Osseo, and no more greater distinctive quality about the city of Osseo, than its wonderful small town charm and tightly-knit community. Though other cities of 30 and 40 square miles balk at Osseo’s size, Osseo homeowners and residents know that living in a community of around 600 families brings about a charm and sense of familiarity that are simply lost in larger towns. Osseo recognizes this wonderful small town charm, and hosts events throughout the year to foster it, including the following:
- In December near Christmas, the city hosts a tree lighting and Santa visit in the park. Horse-drawn carriage rides and hot beverages warm bodies as special visits with Santa warm hearts.
- Around Labor Day, Osseo becomes home to the Lions Roar festival – a street fair with arts, crafts, vendors, a carnival, a parade, and more.
- Throughout the summer, Osseo hosts Music in the Park at Boerboom Veterans Park. The event is home to a huge range of musical genres, from blues and jazz to pop and classical, but it’s also home to a number of special events – previous events have included a Teddy Bear Band for inspiring young children and Elvis impersonators who are as much entertainers as they are musicians.
- Like Music in the Park, Osseo’s Boerboom Veterans Park is also home to Movies in the Park, which hosts a variety of (largely, though not entirely) family-oriented movies that bring Osseo’s residents and homeowners together. Films usually are preceded by cartoons for children and are occasionally accompanied by featured concerts as well as a movie.
- Osseo is also home to a summer Farmer’s Market, where local residents and homeowners can come together to support and enjoy local, fresh, organic produce.

Osseo Parks and Lakes
As a small town comprising not even one square mile in size, Osseo is home to only two parks. That may seem small, but having two parks in under one square mile is a ratio most other Minneapolis-St. Paul cities can’t compare to. And homeowners and residents largely draw on the parks in nearby Brooklyn Park and Maple Grove. Nonetheless, Osseo is home to two parks:
- Boerboom Veterans park is home to a bandshell for musical performances, concerts, movies, and more are held, and features beautiful landscaping and picnic tables.
- Sipe Park is home to lighted tennis courts, a ball field, playground equipment, and more.

Osseo is not home to any large lakes, although there are a number of nearby ponds and lakes available for use in public areas and parks for Osseo residents.
