Savage Homes for Sale

Savage

Savage is a rapidly-growing exurb home to low-cost land in the beautiful Minnesota River valley. With a school district ranked in the top ten in the state, beautiful riverside homes and lakefront property, a short distance from the Twin Cities (just 15 miles from downtown Minneapolis), the city is rapidly becoming one of the number one places to buy a house. The city is rich in history, as the river valley and its surrounding plains were the original home of the Mdewakanton Dakota Indians. That historic sense remains with the community today. Though the city is one of the larger suburbs in Minnesota, currently ranked as the 16th largest city in Minnesota, it is one of the newer suburbs in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. Homeowners in the area take pride in their community, in their city’s history, its abundant parkland and natural beauty, and in the city’s robust economy. Thus Buying a home in Savage means buying a bit of history on a beautiful stretch of land in the Minnesota River Valley, all for a very comparatively low price tag.

Savage’s history dates as far back as any suburb of Minneapolis or St. Paul, as Savage and its surrounding area was originally explored and used by French fur traders as far back as the 1600’s. The area was settled by the Dakota after 1750 near Black Dog Lake in neighboring Burnsville. The Savage area continued to be used by the Dakota for the next 100 or more years for hunting, fishing, and for its water resources. In 1850, Savage’s access to the Minnesota River and to Credit River made it a major spot for traders. Over the next century, while the rest of the Twin Cities developed into a major urban and suburban center, Savage persistently held on to its rural character. In fact, it wasn’t until the 1980’s that Savage began to see a major suburban boom. Today, the suburb still maintains its riverside beauty and rural small-town charm, yet blends that character with modern suburban convenience.

All that development has allowed Savage to become even more beautiful than before. While the river valley still maintains its natural beauty, today that beauty has been not only preserved, but nourished and enhanced by the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge and the Murphy-Hanrehan Park Reserve, two huge park and nature preserves that call Savage home. Together, these two large nature preserves, in addition to the city’s still nascent development, leaves the town with a lingering natural, rural, wild feel.

And Savage has much more to offer in terms of parkland than just its two large nature preserves. The city is home to almost 3,000 acres of city, state, and country-managed parkland – a number unparalleled by other Twin Cities suburbs. That abundant amount of parkland means that wherever you buy a home in Savage, you will be buying a home near parkland. And on top of that, each park has its own unique amenities. Everything from athletic fields and courts (including tennis courts, baseball fields, horseshoe pits, and more), to sledding hills and ice skating rinks, to nature preserves and walking/biking trails can be found in Savage’s parks. Residents of Savage take pride in the wonderful recreational opportunities afforded them by their park system.

Homeowners and those who buy a house in Savage thus get a lot of bang for their buck – for a relatively small price tag, homeowners get some of the best schools in the metro area, some of the biggest parks in the state, one of the most beautiful parts of the Minnesota River Valley, and access to a wonderful small-town community. For all these reasons, it’s no wonder why more and more people are buying their home in Savage, Minnesota.
