Located 23 miles southwest of Minneapolis right alongside the Minnesota River, Shakopee is a large suburb bustling with excitement and full of history. Its location on Minneapolis’ outer ring of suburbs gives it the peace and safety of suburban life, but its proximity to highways 169 and 101 have spurred the growth of its own downtown area, as well as providing residents of Shakopee with a quick drive to Eden Prairie. Shakopee’s mixture of outer suburban peace and rapidly developing excitement, make it a wonderful place to buy a home.
Shakopee consists of about 35,000 residents spread out across 28 square miles, making it one of Minneapolis’ larger suburbs. The Minnesota River flows right through Shakopee, making the Shakopee valley and its surrounding land even more lush and green than the rest of Minneapolis and Twin Cities suburbs. In addition to the Minnesota River, Shakopee is home to a number of lakes, including Rice Lake, Grass Lake, Blue Lake, Deans Lake, Fisher Lake, and O’Dowd Lake. Thus, if you’re looking to buy a lake home or to buy lakeshore real estate, Shakopee is a wonderful place to buy a home. In total, the city’s water comprises over 1.5 square miles of the city’s area, making Shakopee a naturally beautiful place to call home.
Shakopee’s rich history also makes it stand out from other Minnesota suburbs. The town is littered with prehistoric Indian burial mounds along the Minnesota River bluff. In the 18th century, Mdewakanton Dakota Indians migrated from Mille Lacs Lake and continued the tradition of building burial mounds along the river. Those Mdewakanton Dakota were led by their chief, Chief Shakopee, who was given his name when his wife birthed sextuplets—Shakopee meaning “the six.” Chief Shakopee died in 1827 at Fort Snelling. In 1851, the Dakota nation ceded their land, and in 1851 through 1854, travelers settled and trading posts were built in the newly formed city of Shakopee. The village remained largely a quiet farming community until the construction of major highways in the 1960’s, when Shakopee’s downtown area began to grow. Today, Shakopee is the crown seat of Scott County, one of the fastest growing counties in the United States.
That growth has enabled Shakopee to develop some of Minneapolis’ most popular attractions. Shakopee is famously home to the Twin Cities’ largest amusement park—Valley Fair—located just outside the Shakopee downtown area. Shakopee is also home to Canterbury Park, a popular horse racetrack and card club. The Mystic Lake Casino, while technically located on the Shakopee-Mdewakanton Indian Reservation, is located within Shakopee. Finally, Shakopee, with its strong sense of history, is also home to Murphy’s Landing, an 88-acre historic village located along the Minnesota River, giving a historic picture of Minnesotan life in the 1840’s-1890’s.
Aside from those attractions, Shakopee has its own bustling downtown district, with shopping, restaurants, and other attractions. And if Shakopee’s downtown doesn’t have what you’re looking for, Eden Prairie’s mall is just a very short drive from any Shakopee house. And in addition to all these attractions, Shakopee has a very active park and recreation department, which maintains a total of 741 acres of parkland within the city, as well as miles of trails that wind along the Minnesota River and through wooded areas perfect for walking, jogging, and biking. Shakopee also maintains a year-round ice arena for free skating and hockey leagues, an outdoor skate park, an aquatic park, a community center with a gym and fitness equipment, and a teen center that hosts live music and is home to pool, foosball, ping-pong, big TV’s, food, and more. All these attractions make Shakopee more than your ordinary suburb.
Buying a home in Shakopee guarantees a lifetime of access to these venues, to its parks and trails, to its sense of history, and to its lakes. Thus, buying a home in Shakopee guarantees a balance between leisure and entertainment—between suburban comfort and downtown excitement.
