Tonka Bay is a small town located on the south shores of Lake Minnetonka. Originally part of the Excelsior Township, it still remains close to the city of Excelsior, both in location, culture, and community. Its location right on Lake Minnetonka and its proximity to some of the lakes of the west Minneapolis suburbs enables a unique lakeside lifestyle, and its small size and unique location tucked away among other welcoming small towns makes buying a home in Tonka Bay a wonderful experience.
Tonka Bay is located right along the south shore of Lake Minnetonka, and has access to a number of its most beautiful and scenic bays, including Smithtown Bat, Echo Bay, and Gideon Bay. Tonka Bay also features a large chunk of shoreline on the south lake. Tonka Bay is also home to a number of other lakes besides Lake Minnetonka, including Galpin Lake, Lake Virginia, Tamarack Lake, and Lake Minnewashta. This abundance of beautiful lakeshore makes buying a lake home, as well as buying a house on lakeshore property or lakeside real estate easy—finding your dream home is easy, fast, and simple in Tonka Bay because there are so many available options.
Tonka Bay’s lakeside lifestyle enables residents to take part in all the activities of lake life: swimming, fishing, boating, water skiing, and more. And, in the winter, residents can enjoy local ice-skating on one of Tonka Bay’s many lakes or bays, as well as ice fishing. And because Tonka Bay is home to a number of parks and public beaches, all residents, from those living in townhouses to those living in luxury homes, can enjoy and take advantage of the lakeside living Tonka Bay has to offer.
As a small town with just over 1,600 residents in just over 600 houses, Tonka Bay has a welcoming community and friendly small town charm. Despite being such a small town, Tonka Bay features a number of parks and beaches for residents to use. Crescent beach offers access to Lake Minnetonka for all residents, and lifeguards are on duty during summers. Wekota Park also features a beach with summer lifeguards, as well as a park with a playground, tennis court, and picnic tables. Other parks, like Pleasant Park and Old Orchard Park, feature beautiful woods and dock spaces with boat slides and canoe racks, as well as playgrounds, hockey rinks, basketball courts, soccer fields, baseball fields, volleyball posts, picnic tables, and grills. Thus Tonka Bay features the parks and facilities of major suburbs, despite being a small town of under 2,000 residents.
Tonka Bay residents also enjoy their proximity to Excelsior and the surrounding areas. By being primarily residential, Tonka Bay residents enjoy peace and solitude away from bustling businesses, but they simultaneously enjoy proximity to restaurants, shopping, and entertainment in nearby venues. Excelsior features a number of restaurants and shopping areas, as well as a movie theater and a live theatre. Tonka Bay residents seeking more can enjoy Minneapolis, just 20 miles away.
Tonka Bay is home to miles of beautiful Lake Minnetonka shoreline and is conveniently located close to Excelsior and Minneapolis. Its small town community and lakeside lifestyle makes it a perfect place to buy a home.

Just a few decades ago, Tonka Bay was part of the Excelsior Township, being only a short distance from Excelsior’s downtown area. Today, though Tonka Bay has formed its own city, Tonka Bay’s community events largely overlap with the community events of the City of Excelsior. Some highlights from throughout the year include the following:
- In the middle of July, the Crazy Days Fair & Festival features street markets and sales, as well as festival events like face painting. Crazy Days makes for a great family event, as there is something for everyone to enjoy!
- During the Christmas Season, Excelsior hosts a number of events, from horse-drawn carriages, to caroling, to holiday markets, to the North Pole Trolley, and even the lighted lantern parade.
- During the early Fall, Apple Day celebrates Minnesota’s apple harvests. A wide variety of apples are available to taste, try, and buy, and a delicious number of caramel apples.
- Each Thursday throughout the summer, Concerts in the Park host a number of musical events right on Excelsior’s Lake Minnetonka shoreline. A number of musical varieties are booked, from jazz to classical to blues, and each evening’s musical entertainment on the park is entirely free.
These are just a few highlights for events throughout the entire year. For more information on these events, or for information on other Tonka Bay events, visit http://www.ci.excelsior.mn.us/index.aspx?nid=207.
