Wayzata Homes for Sale

Wayzata is a beautiful city located along the northwest shoreline of Lake Minnetonka. With a beautiful view of Lake Minnetonka, Wayzata could be said to be in the perfect location of Minnesota and Minneapolis suburbs—close, but not too close, to the city, right along Lake Minnetonka and between a number of other lakes, in a developed area with close conveniences. Because of its unique combination of convenience and natural beauty, Wayzata is home to some of the most popular and most highly valued houses and properties in the Twin Cities.

Wayzata features miles of shoreline among many naturally beautiful lakes. The city is close to Hadley Lake, Gleason Lake, Parkers Lake, and, most prominently, Lake Minnetonka. The city of Wayzata is primarily located along the shoreline of Wayzata Bay, though it also features access to the more secluded Grays Bay and the open Browns Bay. And unlike many other suburbs along Lake Minnetonka, much of the shoreline along Lake Minnetonka is not residential, but commercial. Thus many restaurants and other venues are located right along the lake, allowing residents of Wayzata unparalleled dining experiences and wonderful shopping experiences in Wayzata’s beautiful downtown area. Of course, in addition to the commercial Lake Minnetonka shoreline real estate, there is much Lake Minnetonka shoreline that is residential, making buying a home on Lake Minnetonka in Wayzata easy and available to buyers looking for a beautiful lake home in one of the Twin Cities’ best suburbs. Residents who forego buying a home directly on the shoreline can enjoy Wayzata’s public parks and beaches, making the lakeside lifestyle of Wayzata available to all its residents.

In addition to the city’s beautiful lakes and picturesque shoreline views, the city also has a rich history that enhances the atmosphere of the city. The Mdewakanton Dakota Indians, a division of the Sioux nation, who originally inhabited the area, valued its beautiful lakes and lands for the rich hunting and fishing it afforded. The area was soon claimed by French explorers, but Wayzata was sold to the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. For decades, the closest American Settlement was at Fort Snelling, in modern day St. Paul. In 1851, the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux enabled settlement of northern areas, and soon Wayzata was settled and named. The name Wayzata derives from word Waziyata. Waziya was an American Indian god of the North—a giant who blew the cold winds from his mouth. With the suffix “ta” added, the name meant “Shore of Waziya” or “Shore of the North.” As settlement continued, James J. Hill extended his Great Northern Railroad through Minneapolis’ western territories, and Lake Minnetonka quickly developed into a resort area. In 1930, US Route 12 opened access to the city, and its population doubled in the decade. By the 50’s, Wayzata had doubled in size and quickly developed its modern shopping centers to meet the daily needs of residents.

The city’s rich history has lead right into its modern development, with shopping centers, restaurants, and entertainment venues along Wayzata Boulevard and along Lake Minnetonka shoreline. The city’s full development, in addition to shopping and convenience centers, has enabled Wayzata to develop a fantastic school system. Newsweek has ranked Wayzata High School as one of the nation’s best schools, and all the schools in the Wayzata district rank highly, both at the national level and at the state level. The city also features two of the most prestigious private schools in the Twin Cities area—the lower school of Blake, and Providence Academy, located a few miles away in Plymouth. Thus the city’s development affords some of the best features of major suburbs.

Buying a home in Wayzata is buying a house tucked away near or along scenic Lake Minnetonka lakeshore. But despite its secluded, serene setting, a house in Wayzata also affords access to some of the Twin Cities best restaurants and shopping centers in one of the Twin Cities’ most beautiful locations. Together with its lakes, schools, and location, Wayzata makes for a great place to call home.
